Latest from Lilywhites Online...
THERE could still be plenty of transfer activity to come, but here is the current state of play with the Rhyl squad for 2008/09.
GOALKEEPERS
Lee Kendall: Signed a new four-year deal and remains arguably the league's finest keeper. Presumably some cover is on the way following John Gann's departure?
DEFENDERS
George Horan: Re-signed until 2010 this week after fears he could be TNS bound. Kingpin of the league's meanest defence last season and is still among very best around at this level.
Paul O'Neill: Will he get the opportunity to consistently play in his best position of central defence this season? The best of him could be yet to come.
Matthew Holt: The chance is there to really make his mark this season. Hasn't let anyone down so far, but another major defensive signing could put him in the shade. Would have benefited from playing in Europe instead of Ruffer.
Chris Roberts: Versatile operator down the left. Another who has not let the team down and deserves an opportunity of a run in the side.
MIDFIELD
Gareth Owen: Age is not on his side at 36 but whenever he's played against Rhyl in the past couple of seasons he has excelled. Could become a pivotal figure amongst an energetic midfield this term.
Gareth Wilson: As he proved in European games he is still one of the most enthusiastic and determined midfielders around. Will be hard to dislodge.
Mark Connolly: Pure class against Bohemian and scored plenty of goals last term. Operating alongside the likes of Owen could really benefit him.
Jimmy Kelly: Needs games under his belt. Is he fully recovered from long-standing knee injury? If he can get near to the form he showed when he first arrived at Belle Vue he could be a big player in the season ahead.
Greg Stones: Many expected him to move on in the summer shake-up but he remains at Rhyl. Was he as good last season as he was in his previous stint at Rhyl? Could be one of those players on the fringe, but on best form he can play a major role.
Craig Garside: Another who did not have the best of luck with injuries last term and his lack of goals became a cause for concern. Has started to show glimpses of best form and not to be written off yet.
Craig Jones: Remains one of Rhyl's biggest assets but needs to be used correctly next season, causing havoc down the flanks.
STRIKERS
Neil Roberts: Proven pedigree with his Wrexham and Wigan background. Many eyes will be upon him, if all goes well he could become one of Rhyl's best ever signings.
Jamie Reed: This lad has real class, in the right team he can become a star and that team could be Rhyl. Although other signings have attracted more attention this one could prove a real diamond.
Chris Sharp: After long injury lay-off began to show snatches of his best form towards the end of last season. Remember those two crackers against Port Talbot? What is his future at Rhyl on the back of the new signings?
Marc Lloyd Williams: The goals began to flow at the back end of the last campaign. Needs the service if he is to remain the poacher everyone knows he is. His partnership with Sharp in that Port Talbot game looked good. Possible 'super sub' role in 2008/09? Remains to be seen but Allan Bickerstaff rates him highly.
Michael White: Where is he? The forgotten man of the squad undoubtedly has the talent but his future at the club remains unclear.
LEAGUE Two club Grimsby Town's official website reports Wrexham midfielder Chris Llewelyn has agreed to join them on a two-year deal.
Swansea-born Llewelyn will arrive at Blundell Park on Monday to finalise his move to the Mariners.
This seemingly ends Rhyl's hopes of signing the Welsh international, but the very fact the Lilywhites tried to secure the signature of such a proven talent reflects the ambition at Belle Vue.
TWO more Football League clubs have been booked for pre-season friendlies at Belle Vue.
League One Oldham Athletic will take on the Lilywhites on Wednesday, July 16, at 7.30pm. The Lancashire club is expected to send a strong squad to Rhyl.
The same is true of Championship side Blackpool when they come to Rhyl on Saturday, August 2 (2.30pm).
These two high profile friendlies come on the back of Rhyl securing a home meeting with Championship giants Wolverhampton Wanderers on July 26.
Current list of friendlies:
July 15 - Colwyn Bay (h) 7.30pm
July 16 - Oldham Athletic (h) 7.30pm
July 26 - Wolverhampton Wanderers (h) 2.30pm
August 2 - Blackpool (h) 2.30pm

AFTER watching Rhyl get outclassed by Bohemian for the second time in a week Lilywhites senior coach Allan Bickerstaff promised big changes at Belle Vue - and he has been good to his word.
Within 48 hours of the Lilies' exit from the Intertoto Cup three leading players had left the club, two top class names had joined and another key regular had re-signed.
And the transfer activity does not stop there with Rhyl officials still involved in talks with ex-Wrexham and Norwich City midfielder, Wales international Chris Llewelyn.
It was certainly a Manic Monday at Belle Vue this week with the following news announced:
OUT - long-serving defender James Brewerton ended a nine-year association with the Lilywhites which had brought 300 appearances. He is expected to join Bangor City.
OUT - last season's Supporters Player of the Year Carl Ruffer left Rhyl by mutual consent in the middle of a two-year contract to join Bradford Park Avenue.
OUT - John Gann, hero of Rhyl's 2006 Welsh Cup winning run, quit the club, his last game being the 4-2 defeat to Bohemian on Saturday.
IN - Gareth Owen, 36, relinquished his role as player-boss of Airbus UK to join Rhyl. Midfield kingpin Owen spent 10 years at Wrexham and was a member of their promotion-winning side in 1993.
IN - Ex-Wrexham trainee Jamie Reed, 21, released by Brian Little last season, became a Rhyl player on Monday evening following successful loan spells with Aberystwyth Town and Colwyn Bay. The Lilies saw off interest from TNS and Chester to recruit the exciting front man.
STAYING - Skipper George Horan, rumoured to be on his way out of Belle Vue to go full-time with TNS, signed a new contract which will keep him at Rhyl until 2010.
These latest signings follow the capture last week of ex-Wrexham and Wigan Athletic star Neil Roberts.
Coach Bickerstaff said on Saturday there was positives to take from the 9-3 aggregate defeat to League of Ireland leaders Bohemian, but stressed the players which bid for WPL glory next term will be wholly different to those who featured in the Intertoto Cup.
"The team we had out today, it's not my team; judge me and the rest of the club on the team that we put in place for the coming year," he said.
"Come August 16 we will have the team we want. Behind the scenes there's major things going on, these are exciting times and I'm sure the football club can be taken to the next level now, with the new players being brought in."
After crashing 5-1 in Dublin, Rhyl were beaten 4-2 at home by Bohemian at Belle Vue on Saturday.
"I can take positives from the second half, but the individual mistakes in the first half were disappointing," added Bickerstaff.
"We addressed things at half time and I think they gave a good show of themselves in the second half which was a little bit disappointing because I think if they'd taken on board what we asked them to do first of all we may have been in a bit of situation come the end of the game.
"It takes a lot for any team to come back after going 3-0 down and to be fair them they've dug in, Connolly scored a couple of very good goals. In the second half they did ever so well."
WALES international Chris Llewelyn is due to have talks with Rhyl officials later today about a possible move to Belle Vue.
The ex-Norwich City midfielder was released by Wrexham at the end of last season following the Robins' relegation to the Conference.
Llewelyn is believed to be attracting the attention of Grimsby Town but will also meet Rhyl chiefs to hear what they have to offer.
If Llewelyn, 28, joins the Lilies he will become the latest member of the "Ex-Wrexham Club" to come to Belle Vue following in the footsteps of Neil Roberts, Jamie Reed and Gareth Owen within the last week.
Owen, 36, signed for Rhyl last night, ending his association as player-boss with Airbus UK. Midfield kingpin Owen was a Wrexham player for 10 years and won promotion with the club in 1993.
Striker Reed, 21, was being chased by TNS and Chester City, but opted for Rhyl. He was released by Brian Little last season following successful loan spells with Colwyn Bay and Aberystwyth Town.
** Apologies for this story not appearing on the blog last night but sadly we have been encountering technical problems.
REPORTS that Rhyl are planning to become a full-time outfit are untrue, says the club's managing director.
A newspaper article carried an alleged quote from president Peter Parry stating the signing of Neil Roberts is the first step towards the Lilywhites becoming full-time.
However, Rhyl MD Dave Milner insisted this is not the case and that Mr Parry was misquoted. "The club has no plans to go full-time," he said.
RHYL defender Carl Ruffer has left the club today by mutual agreement.
Secretary Joe Furnival confirmed the former Chester City player has been released from his contract.
Ruffer had an impressive first season with the Lilywhites and was named Supporters Player of the Year for 2007/08, but struggled notably in the two Intertoto Cup ties against Bohemian.
GREAT news for Rhyl supporters - central defender and skipper George Horan has re-signed for the club.
Pre-season speculation was rife that Horan was bound for full-time football at TNS or Conference clubs, but this morning the 26-year-old stopper reaffirmed his commitment to the Lilywhites for the season ahead.
Horan joined Rhyl from Connah's Quay Nomads for the 2005/06 season and has made over 100 first team appearances for the Lilies.
On a sad note, long-serving defender James Brewerton has quit Belle Vue and is believed to be signing for Bangor City today.
Brewerton made his 300th appearance for Rhyl in the first leg of the Intertoto Cup tie against Bohemian in Dublin.
Also departing the club is goalkeeper John Gann, who made his swansong in Saturday's 4-2 loss to Bohemian at Belle Vue.
Gann, 29, was signed by John Hulse in October 2005 as cover for Paul Whitfield, but got his big chance later that season and was one of the heroes of Rhyl's 2006 winning Welsh Cup run. He made 33 league appearances for the first team over three seasons.
Big signings are being predicted at Belle Vue following the capture of ex-Wrexham star Neil Roberts and two potential recruits were seen at the Bohemians game on Saturday.
Jamie Reed, 20, a promising young Wrexham goal getter who was loaned to Aberystwyth for half a season after previous loan spells at Glentoran and Colwyn Bay, returned to the Racecourse in January 2008 after netting nine Welsh Premier goals for Aber.
Chris Llewelyn, 28, is a midfield maestro who was released by Wrexham this month following the club's relegation to the Football Conference.
A full Wales international, Llewelyn has made 170 league appearances for the Robins and formerly played at Norwich City, Bristol Rovers and Hartlepool United.
Both Reed and Llewelyn are believed to be in discussions with Rhyl officials about a possible move to Belle Vue.
And tonight talks are due to take place with another top class midfielder with strong ex-Wrexham links who now operates in the Welsh Premier League.
RHYL 2 (Connolly 37, 41)
BOHEMIAN 4 (O'Donnell 28, Byrne pen 31, McGuinness 33, Singh 42)
INTERTOTO CUP FIRST ROUND SECOND LEG
(Bohemian win 9-3 on aggregate)

ALL six goals in this afternoon's Intertoto clash at Belle Vue came in a 14-minute spell in the first half during which the Lilywhites showed great battling spirit to remain in the game, if not the tie.
Although the scoreline over the two legs reads an emphatic 9-3 to Bohemian, Rhyl can still take positives from their fifth successive venture into Europe.
Unlike at Dalymount Park last weekend, Allan Bickerstaff's side enjoyed plenty of possession in the second leg and more than matched the League of Ireland leaders for long periods.
Bohemian made a few changes from the side which beat the Lilies 5-1 a week ago but still had the look of a strong full-time outfit capable of progressing further in this competition.
The first 27 minutes of today's game were a virtual non-event as Rhyl comfortably dealt with anything Bohs could deliver, the closest call coming when George Horan could easily have sliced a Harpal Singh cross into his own net.
Mark Connolly, by far the home side's most effective player on the day, hit a 25-yarder just over the bar.
Then on 28 minutes the defensive frailties which let Rhyl down in Dublin resurfaced.
A ball from the left flank by Mark Rossiter found Stephen O'Donnell in far too much space and his chip over John Gann, replacing the unwell Lee Kendall, made it 1-0. Gann might have been better employed staying on his line.
Two minutes later the Irish repeated their penalty "con" from Dalymount when a poor back header by Carl Ruffer let in Glen Crowe who chose the perfect moment to go down under challenge in the box from Gann.
Referee Alexey Kulbakov of Belarus pointed to the spot and Jason Byrne drilled into the bottom left hand corner.
There was fears that Rhyl were in for a real hiding on 33 minutes when Gann's lack of decisiveness on high balls saw Jason McGuinness outclimb everyone to head in a Byrne free-kick.
But to their great credit the Lilies fought right back. A free-kick was won 35 yards out for a foul on Gary Powell and Connolly's swerving effort beat Bohs keeper Brian Murphy all ends up.
Then in the 41st minute a free-kick by Ruffer from deep in the Rhyl half saw Connolly get the better of a challenge with Murphy and put away the loose ball to make it 3-2.
It would be far fetched to say the hosts were back in the tie, but they at least had put themselves in a position to win the game only for disaster to strike within a minute.
O'Donnell created space in the box, rolled the ball towards Byrne who neatly stepped over and ex-Leeds United midfielder Singh sidefooted home.
The second half was much more tame by comparison with Rhyl more than holding their own.
Byrne almost made it 5-2 when he clipped the top of the bar after latching on to a Crowe through ball.
Rhyl should have scored on 57 minutes when Gareth Wilson's excellent cross from the right found George Horan all on his own, but slightly off balance he blazed over.
Jimmy Kelly came on for Chris Roberts on 63 minutes and although the ex-Chester City and Wrexham schemer understandably looked rusty he did add some life to the midfield.
In the 68th minute Kelly hit a cheeky effort with the outside of his left foot which could have deflected anywhere but sailed just wide.
Then Gann showed his prowess as a fine shot stopper, first smothering Crowe's close range attempt before producing the save of the match to deny Byrne from 20 yards.
Rhyl never stopped trying and it is a credit to their fitness after such a short warm-up campaign that they finished as strongly as their opponents.
Craig Garside's high diagonal ball found Craig Jones but his first time chip was off target. Then in added time, James Brewerton was thwarted from close range by Murphy after neat inter-play with Garside and Powell.
There was a feelgood factor around Belle Vue at the final whistle. At least the home side had not been disgraced and the good-natured exchanges between the two sets of fans were a joy to see.
RHYL: John Gann, Paul O'Neill, James Brewerton, Carl Ruffer, George Horan, Craig Jones, Gareth Wilson, Mark Connolly (Craig Garside 80), Chris Roberts (Jimmy Kelly 63), Marc Lloyd Williams, Gary Powell. Unused subs: Greg Stones, Tom Roberts, Matthew Holt.
BOHEMIAN: Brian Murphy, Owen Heary (Thomas Heary 63), Kevin Hunt, Ken Oman, Mark Rossiter, Harpal Singh, Jason McGuinness, Stephen O'Donnell, Glen Crowe (Darren Mansaram 76), John Paul Kelly (Michael McGinlay 42), Jason Byrne. Unused subs: Chris Konopka, Neale Fenn, Chris Turner.
